Perineoplasty (Vaginal Tone Restoration)

What is a perineoplasty?

A perineoplasty is a minor surgical procedure done to repair and strengthen the perineum, which is the area of tissue between the vaginal opening and the anus. This area can become stretched, scarred, or weakened—most commonly after childbirth, prior vaginal surgery, or trauma.

Why is it done?

  • The procedure is done to:Improve vaginal support and tone
  • Reduce a feeling of vaginal looseness or gaping
  • Improve comfort and satisfaction with intercourse
  • Relieve pain or irritation caused by scar tissue
  • Improve cosmetic appearance of the vaginal opening (when this is a concern)

What happens during the procedure?

  • The surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure.
You may receive local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.
  • The lax or scarred tissue is removed, and the underlying muscles are brought together to restore the normal tone and caliber of the vaginal opening.
  • The tissue is then carefully closed to restore normal anatomy and support, which also has a tightening effect.

The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes.

What is recovery like?

  • Mild to moderate discomfort for a few days is common.
  • Swelling and bruising improve over 1–2 weeks.
  • Most patients return to normal daily activities within 1–2 weeks.
  • You’ll be asked to avoid intercourse, tampons, and heavy lifting for about 6 weeks to allow proper healing.

As with any surgery, risks are uncommon but can include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Scarring
  • Need for additional treatment (rare)

Most patients experience:

  • Better support and vaginal tightness
  • Improved comfort
  • High satisfaction when the procedure is done for appropriate reasons
